I was skeptical at first about shelling out nearly $130 for a knife sharpener, especially one designed primarily for hunting knives. My Wüsthof chef's knife sees more action than my Buck fixed blade, but I figured what the heck, let's give this Work Sharp Elite a try.

The sharpener arrived and it was surprisingly compact, not some bulky contraption taking up half my counter space. It came with three abrasives - ceramic rods for hunting knives, diamond plates for serrated edges, and an Arkansas stone for straight edges. I liked that everything I needed was included in the box.



I started with my Buck 110, which had seen better days. After just a few strokes through the guides on the ceramic rod setting, it was noticeably sharper. The angle guides are adjustable and easy to use; even this skeptic could master them quickly. My minor gripe is that the instructional DVD feels unnecessary - who wants to watch a video when you can figure out the sharpener with just a bit of tinkering?



After three weeks of regular use, I've sharpened my chef's knife, my paring knife, and even my wife's beloved Santoku. They all hold an edge noticeably better now. So yes, this Work Sharp Elite is worth the investment if you're serious about keeping your knives sharp. I'm a convert - who would've thought a skeptic could end up a fanboy?
