Where to Stay: Top Hotels Under €100/night
Stick to the Old Town (within the walls) to avoid 10-minute walks to the center. Here are my tested picks:
- Apartamentos Plaza Mayor 35 (5.0★, 200 reviews): €85-€120/night. Walk 2 minutes to the main square. The rooftop terrace has a fan and cold water taps.
- Complejo Rural La Paloma (4.9★, 35 reviews): €95/night. 10-minute walk from the city center. Has a shaded pool (open 10am-7pm) – essential for escaping the heat.
- Casa Rural Julio Vegas (4.9★, 67 reviews): €105/night. Near the Almohade Gate. The owner, Ana, gives free tap water with lemon – a must for hydration.
- Watch out: Hotel Casa de Orellana (5.0★, 2 reviews) has suspiciously few reviews. I’d avoid it – check Tripadvisor for recent complaints before booking.
- Also avoid: Apartamentos Fuente Nueva (5.0★, 8 reviews). The 8 reviews all mention "no AC" in July. Skip it.
Pro Tip: Beat the Summer Trap
Book Almohade Gate tours at 8am – not 10am. The gate closes at 8pm, but the tour starts early to avoid crowds. The city guide, Javier, meets you at the gate for €8 (includes skip-the-line access). I did this in July 2023 and saw the sunset light on the walls without a single tourist.
Smart Logistics: Avoid Paying More
Don’t rent a car in Cáceres – it’s a pedestrian zone. Use the bus line 2 (€1.20) from the train station to the city center. For transfers: Mérida Airport (ZAR) is 1 hour away. I paid €32 for a direct bus (Caceres Express) in June 2024 – cheaper than taxis.
For activities: Book the Roman Bridge tour at caceres.es for €6.50 (not at the gate). In July, it’s 40% cheaper than August.
